Francisco Javier Planes Pedreño
Dr. Francisco J. Planes completed his PhD in Bioinformatics at Brunel University in 2008. In the framework of this 3-year pre-doctoral stay in UK, he focused on the construction of computational tools for the analysis of metabolic pathways. He was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Prize for Doctoral Research at Brunel University.
He subsequently joined the Bioinformatics group at CEIT and started an independent research line in the area of metabolic engineering and systems biology. His research has been focused on the development of novel mathematical models and algorithms for the analysis of metabolic networks in the context of high-throughput technologies (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and meta-omics) with applications to biotechnology, health, ecology and pharmacology. Dr. Planes moved to TECNUN in March, 2017, where he continues his research activity.
Since 2013, the activity of Dr. Planes has mainly concentrated on cancer metabolism, namely on the development of novel algorithms to identify drug targets and response biomarkers in cancer using genome-scale metabolic networks and –omics data. He has led different funded projects in this topic, showing successful computational predictions in different tumors. Currently, he is involved in projects related human gut microbiota, drug toxicity and metabolism and rare diseases.
