    Description
    PhD position on “Design and optimization of a UHF RFID temperature sensor for IoT applications”

    RFID sensors are becoming more and more popular in IoT applications in which low-cost and long-range small sensors are desired. Tecnun has been working in the design of analog RFID front-ends for sensing applications for more that 10 years and currently we are looking for a PhD student to make our analog ASIC design team grow.

    Specifically, at this moment we are planning a new evolution for our tags, in the context of a publicly funded 3-year project in collaboration with Universidad de las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In this project we will focus on the following aspects:

    • Adapt our tags for automatic testing and characterization of the device.
    • Integration of UHF and LF RFID transducer in a single chip.
    • Reduction of PVT variation effect in the system reference modules: Bandgap reference and current source.
    • Development of a low-power and low-voltage configurable CMOS temperature sensor.
    • Migration and optimization of the current designs to a new CMOS fabrication technologies compatible with microcontroller IPs.

    The Phd student be focused on the last two objectives of the project but will be involved all the aspects of the design process in close collaboration with the design and team and the project partners being possible a research stay in Canarias.

The research will be performed in the Engineering Campus, named Tecnun, located in San Sebastian. The PhD advisors will be Dr. Andoni Beriain and Dr. Roc Berenguer, both Telecommunication Engineers with a solid background in the design and implementation of adhoc communication circuits and ASIC designs, especially in the passive RFID sensor field.

    • A candidate used to the specification driven problem solving, ready to apply those methodologies in the design phases of the project.
    • A solid knowledge in electronic design is required: The candidate must be familiar with electronic elements such as current sources, amplifiers, ADCs, voltage references…
    • Experience in Cadence IC design flow is required.
    • Basic knowledge of data transmission/reception is desired: The candidate should be familiar with concepts as SNR, BER, attenuation, Transmitted power, magnetic coupling…

    Offer
    2 year Fellowship with Social Security + contract for the third year.

    Description
    Call for Applications: PhD position on “V2V LF communication system development for autonomous driving”

    Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication is attracting significant attention as it promises to drastically reduce road fatalities, improve mobility and enable a high-level of vehicle autonomous driving.

    Supporting safety critical applications is at the core of V2V communication, and for years, the main technology of choice has been IEEE802.11p. However, in some scenarios (tunnels, adverse climate events, crowded traffic…) the fast and direct localized communication with the car behind is not ensured.

    To face this problem, University of Navarra, Ceit, and PREMO have joined to develop a new LF communication system that will make a direct communication with Low Frequencies (kHz) between successive cars possible.

    In this context, the present PhD will build on the following research challenges: 
    • Study of the use scenario and definition of the communication system specifications. Considering the LF emission regulation and the maximization of the communication range the system specifications will improve the State of the Art.
    • Design, fabrication and testing of the analog module of an LF emitter that accomplishes with the system specifications.
    • Design, fabrication and testing of the analog module of a high sensitivity LF receiver that accomplishes with the system specifications. This design will be done first using commercial components and second in an ASIC using a CMOS fabrication process. 
    • Integration and testing of the whole communication system together with PREMO (antenna designer) and Ceit (digital protocol implementer).
    • Implementation and testing of the whole communication system demonstrator in the Electric Formula Student Car developed by the students of the University of Navarra.

    Description
    Call for Applications: PhD position on “Wireless Sensors Radar Technology”

    Internet of Things (IoT) is pushing research towards increasing connectivity up to unknown levels. RFID, Bluetooth and NFC are good candidates to set a network of tagged elements as they are consolidated technologies. However, the price of tagging millions of objects often makes the final application unaffordable. In this manner, the intelligence of the network sometimes can be concentrated on smart nodes, reducing the electronics in tags to virtually zero (“chipless tags”).
     
    Plus, environment restrictions, such as high temperature, makes electronics fail in certain harsh scenarios and therefore chipless tags would exhibit a competitive advantage respect to their active counterparts. In this context, the combination of identification plus sensing functions will be studied for chipless wireless sensors based on radar technology (backscattered signals).
     
    Several strategies have been employed for radar technology: Impulse Radio based on Ultrawideband (IR-UWB) in time domain and Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave Radar (FMCW) in frequency domain, among others. The application of these technologies in the present piece of research is moved from localization towards identification and sensing.
     
     The present PhD will build on the following research challenges:
    • System analysis for resolution study of wireless chipless sensors within current legal restriction on transmitted power for Short Range Devices (SRD).
    • Designing and implementing a smart customized reader that could discriminate among different reflected signals by radar technology. 
    • Compare time domain pulse technology with frequency domain frequency sweep technology. Commercial test-beds could be adopted for time domain.
    • Include the necessary signal processing to make the system robust to environment changes by making use of, e.g. but not restricted to, the polarization of antennas.

    Convocatoria de solicitudes: Postdoctorado y doctorado en Biología Computacional en la Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad de Navarra

    En el grupo de Bioinformática de la Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad de Navarra, se encuentran abiertos puestos de postdoctorado y doctorado. Nuestro grupo abarca las áreas de medicina personalizada y nutrición, así como la farmacología de sistemas, con un enfoque claro en las redes metabólicas a escala genómica y las aplicaciones al cáncer, la obesidad y las enfermedades raras.

    Se recomienda a los candidatos interesados en utilizar herramientas computacionales y modelos matemáticos para analizar los datos meta-físicos a gran escala en el contexto de la nutrición personalizada. Los candidatos seleccionados participarán en un proyecto europeo a gran escala financiado por H2020 sobre la microbiota intestinal humana y la nutrición. En particular, la tarea principal será la construcción de modelos metabólicos computacionales de la microbiota intestinal humana, basados en un conjunto único de tecnologías experimentales y datos meta-ómicos, estudiando cómo la maquinaria metabólica intestinal se ve afectada por los alimentos y las prácticas culinarias.

    Requisitos:
    Los candidatos deben tener un título en estadística, matemáticas, física, ingeniería o ciencias de la computación, o un título en ciencias biológicas con experiencia sustancial en bioinformática y biología de sistemas, así como habilidades de programación. Apreciaremos a los candidatos con experiencia previa en el análisis de modelos metabólicos y datos meta-ómicos, aunque también se considerarán otros perfiles.

    Oferta:

    • 2 años de posición.
    • Salario: de 29.400 € a 36.500 € según perfil y experiencia.
