Injection Molding: Simulation vs. Real Life

  • Author: Xabier Estonba Gómez. November 2011.
  • Abstract: The goal of this project is to compare the injection process of various molds through computer simulations and real test injections. To carry out this goal,  several Pro/Engineer applications are used : Pro/Mold, Pro/Plastic Advisor and Pro/Manufacturing. With Pro/Mold molds are designed based on the CAD model. The Pro/Manufacturing is used  to create the program (tools, speed and volume movements to rough) which is loaded on the CNC machine to make the mold. And with the Pro/Plastic Advisor the mold filling is simulated. The data obtained from the simulation (pressure, time, material and mold temperature) is used used later in the injection machine, to check out if the simulation in Pro/Engineer is reliable. The results obtained with three different CAD models indicate that the pressure and time obtained from the simulation are not reliably transferable to the lab injection machine. However, the program may be valid for the design of the piece, as it indicates results such as the optimum injection and various details related to the possible final state of the pieces (i.e. bubbles, cracks, etc.)
