The University of Navarra was founded in 1952 by St. Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer. The University of Navarra is a Corporate Work of Opus Dei (a personal prelature of the Catholic Church).
Opus Dei is a personal prelature of the Catholic Church. It was founded in Madrid on 2 October 1928 by St. Josemaría Escrivá. At present there are over 80,000 members from all five continents. Opus Dei is based in Rome, where the church of the prelature is also situated. The information given below is from the book "Information about Opus Dei" by Beat Müller (May 2000).
The Second Vatican Council reminds us that all baptised people are called to follow Jesus Christ, to live and proclaim the Gospel. The purpose of Opus Dei is to contribute to this evangelizing mission of the Church by helping Christians in all walks of life to live in full consonance with their faith in the ordinary circumstances of their lives.
To achieve this end, the prelature provides spiritual formation and pastoral care for its own members and for many other people.
Through this pastoral work, people are encouraged to put the Gospel's teachings into practice by practising the Christian virtues and through the sanctification of their everyday work. For the members of the Prelature, sanctifying work means working in the spirit of Jesus Christ, carrying out one's own task with perfection to give glory to God and to serve others, keeping the spirit of the Gospel present in all aspects and realities of life.
The members of the Prelature carry out their evangelizing task in many different spheres of society. Their work is thus not confined to a particular field such as education, caring for the sick or helping the disabled. The Prelature is eager to remind people that all Christians, whatever their profession, have to cooperate to find Christian solutions to society's problems, and they must bear constant witness to their faith.
